Colombia made the first commercial shipment of medicinal cannabis with THC from its crops in Tocancipá to Mexico. It is an export of the Pideka company for the pharmaceutical industry of that country, which opens the opportunity to explore this market with high potential.
According to ProColombia, it is estimated that Mexico has a market projection of US $ 20,000 million in the coming years. Also, there are about a million potential patients for treatments with these components.

“This is a very important step that we have been able to take with the help of ProColombia and other entities of the Government of Colombia, so it opens the door to consolidate ourselves in a market as important as Mexico, to sell oil to the public or private sector. of medicinal cannabis with THC, ”said Borja Sanz de Madrid, president of Pideka, a company created in Colombia that is part of the Canadian international holding company Ikanik Farms.
According to the manager, in Mexico this product of origin from Colombia is chosen for production, quality and legislation.
The company estimates that in the next two to three years they may be exporting from Colombia between US $ 80 million and US $ 100 million in medicinal cannabis with THC, taking into account that a liter of the product can cost about US $ 45,000.
"This is a conservative range, based on the amount of liters we have per year, which we will gradually increase. We see a great demand in Mexico and we aim to also serve the European market, where we have already seen the interest on the part of pharmaceutical companies in Denmark and England ”, added the manager.

Dane figures show that between January and November 2020, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel, Germany and Switzerland were the countries that bought the most medical cannabis from Colombia.
The jump has been exponential since, in that period, exports went from US $ 275,000 in 2019 to US $ 4.7 million, with a growth of more than 1,600%.
